Er ist etwa 140 Kilometer lang, 30 Kilometer breit und bis zu 95 Meter tief. Wie praktisch alle Seen in Finnland ist er stark zerkl\u00fcftet und von dichten W\u00e4ldern umgeben. An der Westseite des P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne liegt der Isoj\u00e4rvi-Nationalpark, in dem wir heute Nachmittag wandern gingen. Ausgehend von einer ehemaligen Waldarbeiterunterkunft gibt es hier dreissig Kilometer Wanderwege, die \u00fcber Stock und Stein durch den dichten finnischen Wald und an mehreren kleinen Seen vorbeif\u00fchren.
