Das mittelalterliche St\u00e4dtchen liegt ganz im Nordosten des Alentejo, nur circa 13 km von der spanischen Grenze entfernt, auf 870 Metern H\u00f6he. Wie ein Adlerhorst thront die Kleinstadtfestung auf einem Felsplateau des S\u00e3o de Mamede-Gebirges. Der Ort wird von einer m\u00e4chtigen Stadtmauer umgeben. Im Innern gibt es eine pr\u00e4chtige Burg, mehrere kleine Kirchen, enge G\u00e4sschen mit weissget\u00fcnchten H\u00e4usern und sch\u00f6ne Pl\u00e4tze. Man bekommt fast den Eindruck, dass man sich in einem Freilichtmuseum befindet.
