Die Landschaft besteht eigentlich aus baumartiger Steppe, wurde aber im Laufe der Zeit mehr und mehr vom Menschen kultiviert. Um Reste der urspr\u00fcnglichen Landschaft zu erhalten und zu sch\u00fctzen wurde 1973 Ungarns erster und gr\u00f6sster Nationalpark, der Hortob\u00e1gyi Nationalpark gegr\u00fcndet, der auch als UNESCO-Biosph\u00e4renreservat anerkannt ist. Teile des Nationalparks sind durch Wanderwege erschlossen.
